Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery:

Properties of fluids, pressure measurement, buoyancy and flotation, fluid
kinematics and fluid dynamics, flow through orifices and mouth pieces, notches
and weirs, laminar and turbulent flow, flow through pipes, forces on immersed
bodies, open channel flow, impact of jets, hydraulic turbines and pumps.

Hydrology and Irrigation Engineering:
Definition of duty, delta, base period, crop period, types of rain gauges, methods
of estimating runoff, hydrographs, classification of head works and weirs,
distribution works, types of dams, components of dams, forces acting on dams
and causes of dam failure, components of hydro power plants.

Strength of Materials:
Simple stresses and strains, Hooke’s law, elastic constants, stress strain curve of
mild steel bars, temperature stresses, stresses in compound bars, stresses on
oblique planes, principal stresses and strains, Mohr’s stress circle, shear force
and bending moment for beams, torsion of circular shafts, pure torsion, combined
bending and thrust, deflection of simple beams, thin and thick cylinders, columns
and struts, direct and bending stresses, unsymmetrical bending and shear
centre, analysis of trusses, method of joints and method of sections.

Theory of Structures:
Propped cantilevers, fixed beams, continuous beams, arches, cables and
suspension bridges, moving loads and influence lines, static and kinematic
indeterminacies, moment distribution method, Kani’s method and matrix methods
of analysis for beams and frames.

Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures:
Material properties, material grades and tests, workability and mix design of
concrete, basic design principles in working stress and limit state methods, limit
state design of beams, beams, slabs, columns, footings, water tanks, retaining
walls, design bridges, IRC specifications and loadings for bridges, slab type and
T beam bridges, basic concepts of prestressed concrete, losses in prestressed
concrete, design of prestressed beams including end block.

Design of Steel Structures
Riveted and welded joints, tension and compression members, gantry girders,
roof trusses, plate girder and truss bridges, water tanks, transmission towers,
column bases, basic concept of plastic analysis.

Geotechnical Engineering:
Origin and classification of soils, three phase system, basic definitions and
volume relations, consistency limits, soil classification, concepts and tests of
permeability of soil, effective stress concept and its calculation, capillarity and
seepage in soils, flow nets, flow through the earth dams, Boussinesq’s concept of
stresses in soil, basic concepts of consolidation and compaction of soils, shear
strength of soil, stability of slopes, concept of earth pressure and its evaluation,
soil exploration principles and methods of site investigation, bearing capacity of
soils and its evaluation, shallow foundations, settlement analysis of shallow
foundations, types of piles and load carrying capacity of piles, types of caissons
and their installation techniques, scour depth and grip length of caissons.

concepts of chain, compass, plane table and theodolite surveying, principles of
leveling, principles of tacheometry surveying and trigonometric leveling, method
of setting out simple curves.

Quantity Surveying: basic concepts of quantity surveying, units and
specifications, types of estimates, analysis of rates and abstract estimates,
computation of volume of earth work and reservoir capacity, computation of
building estimate.

Construction Materials: preparation, classification, suitability criteria of
construction materials such as stones, bricks, tiles, aggregate, cement, mortars
and concrete, wood, plastics, glass and asbestos.

Construction Practice:
Classification of buildings, construction of masonry work, types of doors,
windows, ventilators, lintels and sunshades, finishes of roofs and floorings,
scaffolding, stair cases, protective, decorative finishes and termite proofing.
Strength of Materials and Theory of Structures: Simple stresses and strains,
Hooke’s law, elastic constants, stress strain curve of mild steel bars, temperature
stresses, shear force and bending moment for beams, pure torsion of circular
solid and hollow shafts, closely coiled helical spring under axial loading,
deflection of simple beams, internal pressure on thin cylinders, axially loaded
columns, analysis of perfect frames using method of joints, propped cantilevers,
fixed beams, continuous beams.

Hydraulics:
Properties of fluids, pressure measurement, buoyancy and flotation, continuity
equation for fluid flow, fluid kinematics and Bernoulli’s theorem for fluid flow,
principles of flow through orifices and mouth pieces, notches and weirs.

Transportation Engineering:
Basic principles of highways and soil engineering, highway survey and traffic
engineering, highway construction and maintenance, introduction to permanent
way of railways, station yard and maintenance of railways, types of bridges,
culverts and cause ways.

Design of RCC Structures:
Basic concepts of concrete, reinforcing steel, philosophy of limit state design,
design of beams, slabs, lintels, sunshades, T-beams, columns, footings and
staircases.

Design of Steel Structures:
Riveted and welded joints, tension and compression members, roof trusses.

(for ITI holders)


Building Materials and Components:
Sand types, lime, cement, tiles, terracotta, stone ware and earthen ware, names
of different parts of building, bricks, manufacture of bricks, brick masonry,
Flemish and English bonds, tools and equipments in building construction,
scaffolding, terms used in stone masonry, principles and classification of stone
masonry, timber and its structure, types of foundations, shoring and under
pinning.

Elementary Strength of Materials:
Calculation of moment, centre of gravity, moment of inertia, and section modulus
of simple sections, Shear Force and Bending Moment for simple beams like
simply supported and cantilever and subjected to concentrated loads, and
uniformly distributed loads.

Elementary Hydraulics and Irrigation Engineering:
Pressure of a fluid, total pressure in a surface, center of pressure, velocity and
total heads of fluids, venture meter, flow through orifices and mouth pieces, loss
of head due to friction and other factors of flowing, flow through pipes and open
channels, introduction to water resources engineering, duty, delta, intensity of
irrigation, hydrograph, catchment area, introduction to types of dams, reservoirs,
and canals.

Reinforced and Preliminary Prestressed Concrete:
Advantages of reinforced concrete over other types of construction, bonding and
placing of reinforcement, mixing, laying and consolidation of concrete, finishing of
RCC surfaces.

Surveying:
Types of theodolite survey, uses, methods of plotting, checks and error
adjustments, open and closed traverse and their application to engineering
problems, calculation of area from traverse, determination of heights, setting out
building, culverts, centre lines of dams, bridges and slope of earth work.

Estimating and Costing:
Analysis of rates of typical items, abstracting and building, specifications,
contracts, valuation.

Railways:
Permanent way, station and yards, Points and crossing
